Sci-fest Africa

By showcasing the most applicable and topical science relevant to our communities through activities at SciFest Africa (regional and national), and the outreach programmes, science will be communicated in an enthusiastic and understandable way so as to change misconceptions about science and assisting our youth about to embark on a career choice to make an informed decision regarding science, technology, engineering and mathematics as a career choice.

Since its establishment in 1997 as a project of the Grahamstown Foundation, Scifest Africa, South Africa’s National Science Festival, has become very successful in changing misconceptions and attitudes of the general public towards science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Through a range of interactive activities ranging from lectures, workshops, talks shows, exhibitions etc, visitors are shown how STEM underpins their daily lives. Learners and educators are given the opportunity to experience science outside the classroom in a fun and informative way. They are able to interact with scientists who share their work and provide career guidance thereby acting as role models for our youth.

Your Five Senses

We often forget that science is not just a textbook applied subject. We often forget that we use all our senses everyday to experience the world around us in its full capacity. Students from the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein showed other learners this Scifest that science is fun and diverse.

SASOL, The New Age

Don’t work hard work smart. Why not make your scientific ideas work for you. Chem. City a subsidiary of Sasol Chemical industries can help turn your ideas into lucrative business opportunities. Santisha Chattergoon speaks to Elain Prosper a representative from Chem City at their exhibition stall.

Solar Power The Way Forward

Have you ever imagined a clean car, one that runs of electricity rather that diesel or petrol. Imagine what environmental impact it would have, with a reduction in carbon, there would be a possible decrease in the effects of global warming. Santisha Chattergoon speaks to technology evangelist Winestone Jordaan about the concept.
