My name is Santisha Chattergoon. I am 22 years old and came to Rhodes University in 2008 with the hopes of completing a BJourn (Bachelor of Journalism) degree. I want to let you know a little bit about myself.
I pride myself with being out spoken, opinionated and self motivated, inspired and dedicated which I believe that are qualities that any journalist should possess in the industry. I am a person who is methodical, consistent and imaginative, who is always willing to go the extra mile to make sure that I obtain quality work as an end result.
I have been able to work successfully both in groups, as a leader as well as I am able to take orders and carry these out to the end, and individually. Both requires one to be determined and focused and I believe that it is important to take every task seriously, no matter how small it may seem, so that standards of quality are ensured.
Religion and philosophy have always been a fascination and interest of mine from an early age; this was inspired by senior members of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness).
Journalism for me ideally was to give voice to the voiceless, and for the greater part of my high school years this was how I felt. Hailing from an Indian township of Phoenix just outside Durban, I found that many social and economic issues plagued the community and its citizens were more often than not left unheard. I’ve wanted to give back to them their voice which has been silence for far too long and this was my motivation for wanting to obtain a BJourn Degree. Rhodes University is renowned for having produced high standard journalists and it is for this reason that I have opted to study here. Although journalism has changed over the years and in South Africa many would say that the better part of the journalism age has been during the Apartheid era, but I believe that journalism today proves to be just as fulfilling as well as challenging (if not more) as it used to be.
I do hope that this has helped you to understand me better and give you a little insight as to the type of work I can produce.
